Brief on the Nigerian National Committee of the World Energy Council (NNC-WEC)

The World Energy Council (WEC), founded in 1923, is a United Nations accredited and not-profit organisation registered in UK that is dedicated to promoting the sustainable supply and use of energy for the greatest benefit of all. WEC has members made up of National Committees of over 100 countries, including the Nigerian National Committee (NNC).

With the approval of Nigeria’s membership of WEC by the Council on the 6th day of April, 1960, the Nigerian National Committee was born, referred to as the Nigerian National Committee of the World Energy Council (NNC-WEC). African WEC Members constitute WEC- Africa. The goals of NNC-WEC is to ensure adequate and dependable supply of energy in diverse forms, which are essential for improving the nation’s economy, security and standard of living; through the development of appropriate policies and plans for the judicious exploitation, and conservation where necessary, as well as efficient and environmentally sound utilization of the nation’s energy resources.

OBJECTIVES OF NNC-WEC.

The Nigerian National Committee of the World Energy Council (NNC-WEC) has the following specific objectives:-

  1. To participate in the activities of the World Energy Council in the development and peaceful use of energy resources to the greatest benefit of all.

  2. To consider, with particular reference to the situation in Nigeria any matter which may from time to time be referred to it by the World Energy Council; and, likewise, to consider such other matters falling within the scope of the objectives of the World Energy Council as may, from time to time, be referred to the Committee either by an appropriate arm of the government or by any member of the Committee.

  3. To render such advice as desirable to the Federal Government of Nigeria and its agencies towards the formulation and implementation of National Energy Policies and Plans

NNC-WEC activities cover a comprehensive range of energy-related issues and all types of energy resources – coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear, hydro and renewables.

Focal areas of interest include: medium and long-term energy projections, market restructuring, energy efficiency, environment and energy, energy systems financing; energy pricing and subsidies. Energy and poverty reduction, ethics benchmarking and standards, use of new technologies as well as energy issues in developed, transitional, and developing countries. NNC-WEC also produces authoritative reports, analyses, research, case studies, policy and strategy recommendations for key decision-makers. NNC-WEC is willing to partner with individual and cooperate entities on joint studies, research and programmes provided that funding is available from the partners.

NNC-WEC has two categories of membership, namely: (i) Corporate Members (ii) Individual Members

Corporate Members: The Corporate Members comprise of the following:

  • Organisations engaged in the exploration, production and bulk transportation of primary resources;

  • Energy transformation organisations;

  • Energy Distribution and Marketing organizations;

  • Organisations rendering services to the Energy Industry;

  • All government agencies related to the energy sector;

  • Universities and other Higher Institutions of learning with faculties dealing with energy studies or with research programmes in the field of energy;

  • Professional Bodies and Organisations representing professionals in the field of energy.

Individual Members: Individuals who have interest or are actively engaged in the energy sector.

All membership class is by admission and payment of the prescribed registration and annual membership dues.

Democratically governed by an Executive Council, whose members are elected at the Committee’s AGM. The officers of the Committee are the Chairman, the Vice-Chairman, Secretary Assistant Secretary and the Treasure.
